More OSTraining Topics and Videos

Note: This blog post is one of several announcements we’re making to celebrate our 5th birthday.

With our 5th anniversary here, we’re happy to announce two significant improvements to OSTraining that we hope will make your training more useful and enjoyable.

Before we explain the two exciting changes we are announcing today, let’s quickly recap how OSTraining has arrived to where we are now:

How did we get here?

  • 2007: Created a Joomla SEO book and membership site
  • 2008: Taught our first live class at the CMSExpo in Chicago
  • 2009: Moved from JoomlaTraining.com to ostraining.com so we could add live Drupal and WordPress classes
  • 2010: Launched video membership at ostraining.com
  • 2011: Added WordPress, Drupal and Coding videos, hired our first employee and wrote the best-selling Joomla book
  • 2012: Reached the point where video training was more than 50% of our business
  • 2013: Wrote the best selling Drupal book
  • 2014: Passed 30,000 online students

As you can see, we’ve always preferred evolution over revolution:

  • We started with live training, then online training slowly become our main business
  • We started with Joomla, then added WordPress, Drupal, Coding and SEO videos

Because we never took venture capital money, we’ve grown slowly and steadily, adding a couple of employees each year.

We’re going to keep on evolving, and here’s how we’re changing today:

Improvement #1: A wider range of topics

Since 2009, we’ve focused on “the Big 3”: WordPress, Drupal and Joomla. Yes, we’ve also had classes on Coding and SEO, but today we’re going to start covering an even wider range of topics.

February gives you a great example of that new, wider coverage:

  • This week we’ve published “Gimp – Part 1” and “Introduction to the Command Line“.
  • Next week we’ll publish “Migrating Joomla 1.5 to 3” and “Migrating Drupal 6 to 7”.
  • The following week week we’ll publish “Gimp – Part 2” and “Desktop Server (Local installations for WordPress, Drupal and Joomla)”.

Other classes in the pipeline include an enormous new CSS class, “Growing Your Web Business”, “Ghost”, “Building Membership Sites”, “Introduction to Git” and more.

So you can expect continued coverage of WordPress, Drupal and Joomla, but we’ll also be releasing classes on web design, development, business and more.

Improvement #2: More videos

So, if we’re going to cover more topics, what’s the best way to do that? Rather than provide less coverage for current topics, we’re going to publish more classes.

You may have noticed this already, but since late 2014, we’ve been publishing 2 videos classes per week. That has been a test-run. We’ve been recruiting teachers and building a pipeline of content. If you’re interested in working with us, we’re still looking for teachers! But, we’re confident that we can produce two high-quality classes (an average of 20 videos) every week.

One knock-on effect of this is that we will add fewer e-books to our library. Last year we added 1 new book every month. In 2015, we’ll add e-books when they’re really relevant to our members. For example, look for “Drupal 8 Module Development” and “WooCommerce Cookbook“.

Over to you …

Please feel free to send us your feedback on these changes. In particular, if you have any suggestions for topics you’d like to see covered at OSTraining, let us know in the comments below.

Happy Aniversary to OS Training! Here, I would like to make a suggestion on Joomla tutorials. Topher did a good job teaching how to do programming WordPress plugin. I suggest a similar tutorials to be created for programming Joomla extension or plugin.
