In order to start your work with this section, you need to click Add. As soon as you do, a pop-up will appear:

Redirects_2.jpg

There are two fields here: Old URL and New URL.

The Old URL field must contain the URL details which redirect the visitors of your site to the new URL. The system functions in such a way that it will automatically adjust all input data according to the current location of the site.

For example, if you use /page-1 within the Old URL field, the system will process it as http://www.example.com/page-1 because it uses the path from Settings – Website Address field.

The New URL field must contain the destination URL, where your visitors will be redirected after visiting the Old URL.

There are 3 types of redirects which can be used for the New URL:

1. Absolute path. This term means that the complete page URL will be used for redirection.

Redirects_4.jpg

2. Relative path based on the domain name. This term implies that with the help of this path, your visitors will be redirected according to the domain name by specifying page name with ‘/’ sign (Example: /page-2).

If your domain name is www.example.com, the New URL is /page-2. So, the visitors will be redirected to the http://www.example.com/page-2.

If your site is located in the subfolder (example: http://www.example.com/subfolder/page-2), the system will still redirect your visitors according to the related domain name (example: http://www.example.com/page-2).

Redirects_5.jpg

3. Relative path based on the current location of the site. The choice of this path will help you to redirect your visitors to the current location of your site. Pay attention to the fact that the name of the page won’t contain ‘/’ sign (example: page-2).

If your domain name is http://www.example.com/subfolder (where ‘subfolder’ is the folder of your site), the New URL is page-2. It means that, the visitors will be redirected to the http://www.example.com/subfolder/page-2.

Redirects_6.jpg

One more detail you should pay attention to is the use of the WildCard option. It allows you to redirect a batch of URLs based on the defined mask.

For example, let’s say there is a list of links which should redirect to the http://www.example.com/events:

http://www.example.com/calendar-for-groups/2012-09-15/1093

http://www.example.com/calendar-for-groups/2011-W27/group

To accomplish this task, you have to add ‘*’ sign after /calendar-for-groups/ within the Old URL field. All links, which contain /calendar-for-groups/, will automatically redirect your visitors to the necessary page.

Redirects_7.jpg

Take into consideration the fact that the system processes ‘*’ sign in the URL as a WildCard expression by default. If you want the system to read this sign (*) as part of the URL address you should disable this function. To do this, you need to put a mark in the Disable WildCard field.

Redirects_8.jpg

It means that http://example.com/profile/Nice* in the New URL field will redirect the visitors to the page /Nice*.

Now go ahead and practice with the use of this section for your MotoCMS 3 website template. You will certainly find it extremely useful in the future.
