All About WooCommerce’s New Onboarding Process

WooCommerce 2.4 was released in August, and had a really cool codename, “the Helpful Hedgehog.”

Why did the WooCommerce team choose that name? Because they focused on making WooCommerce much easier to use.

In particular, the WooCommerce team worked on a brand new onboarding feature. When you install WooCommerce 2.4, you’ll now several screens that walk you setting up your store.

This onboarding process really is easy to use and it’s one that many plugin developers could emulate.

Here’s a walkthrough of the onboarding process with images.

First, you see a welcome screen. Click the “Let’s Go” button.

On the second screen, WooCommerce will offer to create all the key store pages for you, including “Shop”, “Cart”, “Checkout” and “My Account”. These will be normal WordPress pages, but with the appropriate WooCommerce shortcuts inside:

On the third screen, you can localize your store by choosing your store’s location, currency and measurement units:

On the fourth screen, you can set up your taxes:

On the sixth screen, you’ll see that PayPal is already available as a gateway. All you need to do is enter your email address.

On the seventh and final screen, you’re finished. All you need to do is click “Create your first product!” button.

Once you do start to add your first product, you’ll also see new tooltips to guide you through the WooCommerce screens. You’ll see this on the main WordPress options:

You’ll also the see tooltips on WooCommerce-specific elements:

All-in-all, the new onboarding process is a real improvement. I suspect it will noticeable increase the number of people who finish the process of setting up their first WooCommerce store.
